In the same way that you can’t have potatoes without gravy, nor sweet potatoes without marshmallows… but I digress. Cranberry sauce is also really good paired with duck or lamb. The acid from the homemade cranberry sauce will help to cut through the otherwise gamey taste of such animals. You can use it as a side or on a rack of lamb, similar to how you would use a cherry glaze.
What is the difference between a pressure cooker and an Instant Pot?
If you follow me over on Instagram, you’ll see that I recently got an Instant Pot and have started a new series on IGTV testing it out. I had a pressure cooker before and really didn’t like it. The insert pot was supposed to be non-stick. However, after cooking chicken in it one time on sautee mode, I was never able to get the burnt, charred pieces off. So it sat in our pantry. And yet I continued to read in Facebook Groups and from friends on how amazing the Instant Pot was. So, I started to do a bit more research to see what and if there was any difference between the two.
4 basic things to know before buying an Instant Pot
- Instant Pot is actually a brand. I thought all pressure cookers were created equal, but oh no! They most certainly are not – I assure you.
- Instant Pot is a brand of pressure cookers, but not all pressure cookers are Instant Pots.
- Instant Pot the brand, has three primary sizes of Instant Pots: the mini, the standard (6 quarts), and the Duo Plus (8 quarts).
- Instant Pots in the same size can come with different settings. Some are 6-in-1’s, some are 7-in-1’s, and so on.
- The size of the Instant Pot is not actually based on the workable area. You cannot fill the Instant Pot completely full, only 2/3 the way. Meaning you are not getting a full 8 quarts (etc) of usable space.
How do you make cranberry sauce from fresh berries?
Making Cranberry Sauce from fresh whole berries is super easy and just plain better for you. Don’t fall for cranberry juice concentrate that’s been mixed with gelatin. Finding local, fresh, whole berries will make you feel good about what you’re feeding your guests, your body, and support your local farmers. You can take combinations of the following list to make a delicious, homemade cranberry sauce on your stovetop, Instant Pot, or CrockPot.
For this Cranberry Sauce Recipe:
- Cranberries – You’ll, of course, need fresh whole cranberries.
- Sweetener – You can use your choice of cane sugar, honey, liquid stevia, or other sweeteners. Note that you’ll want to start by adding a little at a time until the taste is right.
- Citrus – There is something about the acid in citrus that really brightens and balances homemade, tart cranberry sauce. You can use lemon juice, orange juice, and even lime juice! If you don’t have any of the juices on hand or are running low, you could also zest any of those fruits to make a simple syrup by combining: water, zest, and sugar before adding it to the cranberries.
- Additional Spices – This is where you can get really creative! You really only need the previous three to make cranberry sauce. However, adding a few special spices like cinnamon or salt can really bring this Thanksgiving side dish full circle.

- Is cranberry sauce supposed to be hot or cold? This is all about preference. I love a warm cranberry sauce on my turkey. However, cold cranberry sauce can be a welcomed contrast to an otherwise warm dish (turkey, mashed potatoes, onions, etc.)
- How long does cranberry sauce last in the fridge? When sealed appropriately in Tupperware or with a plastic wrap on top, it will last a week in the fridge easily.
- Can you eat cranberry sauce when pregnant? YES! Cranberries are packed full of Vitamin C and other good nutrients. Cranberry juice is often suggested to pregnant mommas because of that and the cleansing qualities for the body. Cranberries are great for preventing UTI’s (an unfortunate and common happening during pregnancy). Instant Pot Cranberry Sauce
- 32 oz fresh cranberries
- 1 1/2 cup orange juice
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp ground ginger powder
- 1/2 - 1 cup sugar or sweetener If using honey, start with 1/2 cup
- Open your fresh, whole cranberries and rinse thoroughly. Remove any stems or bad berries from the bunch.
- Add your berries, orange juice, cinnamon stick, salt, and ground ginger powder to the Instant Pot.
- Using the custom pressure setting, set to 15 minutes and start. You can then let the pressure release by itself or use the quick release. The majority of your cranberries should have popped.
- Once the pressure has released, add your sugar or sweetener 1/4 cup at a time, whisking thoroughly. The mixture will be warm enough to dissolve the sugar. Taste test for your desired sweetness level.
- If you would like a smoother consistency, pass the cranberry sauce through a blender. It will then thicken upon cooling. Enjoy served warm or cold.
